Designed and Manufactured by ART

Australian Rail Technology (ART) continues to strengthen rail infrastructure safety and efficiency with its Modular Remote Isolation (MRI) system, a locally designed and manufactured solution that enables safer and more efficient isolation of traction power across rail networks.

Remote isolation systems provide a reliable method for confirming safe access to the rail corridor during maintenance activities or emergency situations. By enabling operators to isolate overhead traction power remotely, these systems reduce the time and complexity associated with traditional isolation procedures while helping ensure that maintenance personnel can work safely within the rail corridor.

ART’s MRI solution has been developed to meet the growing demand for improved safety and operational efficiency in rail network isolation. The system incorporates high-integrity switching technology designed to support Safety Integrity Level (SIL) requirements and allow network isolation workflows to be carried out digitally. Independent engineering and testing processes further strengthen the reliability of the system by reducing the likelihood of undetected faults during operation.

The modular architecture of the MRI system allows it to be integrated into existing traction power infrastructure. Many current 1500V isolation systems can be upgraded by adding ART components such as auxiliary contact boxes, voltage sensors, input and negative cables, and control conduits. When combined with motorised drive units and controllers, these upgrades enable isolators to be operated remotely while maintaining high safety standards.

Central to the system is a scalable Area Isolation Controller that enables coordinated control of multiple isolation devices across a section of the network. The controller integrates with associated equipment such as voltage and current monitoring systems, rail continuity monitoring, and electronic danger tagging, ensuring operators have clear visibility of the isolation status and electrical condition of the overhead network.

ART’s modular remote isolation technology has already been deployed across rail networks in Victoria and New South Wales, demonstrating its capability as a practical and reliable solution for modern rail operations. By enabling faster response times, improved monitoring and safer maintenance procedures, the system supports the ongoing modernisation of traction power infrastructure across Australia.

With more than four decades of experience in designing and manufacturing rail infrastructure equipment, Australian Rail Technology continues to deliver innovative engineering solutions that improve safety, efficiency and operational reliability across rail networks.
