Australian Rail Technology (ART) continues to support safer rail operations through its rolling stock vigilance systems, designed to monitor driver alertness and ensure trains are being actively operated at all times. These systems play a critical role in preventing “dead-man” scenarios and maintaining safe train control across rail networks.

At the core of the system is a vigilance control unit that continuously monitors key driver actions. Inputs such as throttle movement, operation of lights and horns, brake activity and the dead-man switch are tracked to determine whether the driver remains attentive and engaged with the train’s operation.

Each driver action resets an internal timer within the vigilance system. If the system detects that no valid activity has occurred within the preset period, it issues a warning through visual or audible alerts in the driver’s cab. The driver can acknowledge the alert either by pressing the vigilance acknowledgement button or by performing another recognised operational input.
Should the warnings go unanswered, the system automatically initiates a safety response.

Emergency braking is applied and the train is brought to a controlled stop, ensuring that potential incidents caused by driver incapacitation or inattention are prevented.
