Enclosures and Junction Boxes

Railway grade enclosures can be either for static or dynamic applications, the latter often requiring very special design requirements. Static enclosures can be track-side or within substations. Dynamic enclosures are specific to rolling stock applications and can be either mounted underframe or internal within the carriage.

Underframe enclosures require:

  • Robust construction to withstand routine shock and vibration loads, ballast or other missile strikes, vandalism
  • High levels of corrosion protection to withstand extreme temperatures and humidities, salt-laden air, acidic train wash solutions, so that mechanical attachment is not compromised, and that the often critical contents continue to function. this is achieved by primarily using stainless steel, or careful painting processes
  • Special attention to door/panel seals to maintain ingress protection levels especially for vibration

Internal enclosures require:

  • Compact packaging
  • Ease of service
  • Special attention to materials to ensure low flammability and toxicity in the event of fire
