High-Current DC Isolators
ART switch isolators have been installed in NSW and Victorian network since the mid 1980s and have a proven track of record. There is no evidence of any failure or rejections in service.
1500V Dc 3000A ART Switch Isolators are installed throughout NSW and Victorian rail network at all sub-stations and along the track
Compliance with NSW and Victorian Rail authorities
The NSW and Victorian authorities specify that before work can commence on 1500V overhead wiring, it must be isolated from all sources from which it could be made alive. This is done by providing at least one visible break in each source.
All Australian Rail Technology switches and links are not intended to open or close whilst carrying load current, that is, they are not load breaking or load making.
As NSW and Victorian railway networks operate on 1500V DC, we manufacture different styles of High current DC isolators up to 3,000A. The range of switches includes 2 and 3 positions, manually operated devices: ‘Open’, ‘Closed’ and ‘To Rail’.
Recent rail contracts
We have recently designed and manufactured 4,800A Negative Changeover Switch in enclosure for Prince Alfred sub-station. The switch is designed to be manually operated and is for indoor applications only.
We also produce different applications for tram network in Melbourne, Victoria up to 1,000V and up to 1,000A.
Currently Australian Rail Technology is undertaking the development of a motorised version of the switches. The motorised switch application provides the effort to change the switch status and operate from the control room by an operator. This arrangement interfaces with both local and remote (SCADA) control of the switch.
In-house testing
ART performs the Voltage Withstand Tests on the Main Circuit to measure of the resistance of the main circuit and Mechanical Operating test in accordance of AS 1306.

Motor driveART is currently developing motor-drive versions of all common isolator styles. These can be used in remote, difficult access, or other critical applications where it is not always possible to sent a technician to isolate a section. The motor drive unit will be backwards compatible for field upgrade of existing installations. Options include: Blade detection/auxiliary contacts Manual operation (hand drive) in the event of power failure SCADA interface Other COMMS options Battery/Solar operation
